AI Governance & Securitisation
With the adoption of the EU AI Act in 2024, the EU sealed a double approach to how it regulates AI, as it created a separate legal framework to encourage the use of dangerous AI systems by police, migration control and national security authorities. Now, this double approach is backfiring as both public institutions and the private sector are taking advantage of these loopholes to spread the use of rights-violating AI systems, in the name of innovation, competitiveness and militarisation.
In this area of work, Protect Not Surveil convenes a space for civil society to ensure a cohesive approach and collective advocacy strategies, shine a light on and resist EU AI governance within the broader securitisation context.
